Weekend 1: Camping, Cooking, and Canoeing

Food Saturday night's meal is provided and cooked as a team for practice. Please bring all other meals you may need, ideally simple in scope for tight schedules. Plan “no cook” sandwiches/meals for lunches. Dinners are encouraged to be more elaborate: Charcoal grills and stoves are available for cooking burgers and hotdogs on Friday night. A stove for heating water for an instant oats type breakfast on Saturday and Sunday morning.

Lodging You will be provided a tent, sleeping bag, and mat to set up by the lake. You are always welcome to come inside the cabin's bunkhouse.

Course

  • Over this weekend we will begin planning our river trip destination, itinerary and menu.

  • Discuss personal gear, group gear, camping kitchens and tents.

  • Navigation, GPS, map and compass

  • Water sterilization, latrines and hygiene.

  • Knots, fire building, knife, axe and saw.

  • Leave No Trace Camping

  • Plant identification. Some edible and some inedible.

  • We will finish after lunch on Sunday (probably by 2pm so you can drive home)

Friday: Arrive by noon; bring your lunch with you.

 

1 -1:30 PM: Brief tour of Longleaf

1:30-2:30: “Wilderness Risk Taking” lecture (Yonge)

2:30-3:00: “Gimme Shelter!” lecture (tents and tarps), Old tents smell! (Bivvy), replacement tents (Yonge)

3:00-3:30: “Fire building” (Yonge)

3:30-4:30: “Knot Tying” with hand out (all staff, plus student)

4:30-5:30: Tent and Tarp Set Up (all staff)

5:30: Knife/axe/saw/fire building demo. Wood Splitting. Remember: “sharper is safer”. (all staff)

6:00: Cook dinner/free time. (Dutch oven demo, Yonge)

7:30 “Careers in Wilderness Medicine” (Plash)/LNT fireside chat (hand out)

8:30 End of day

 

Saturday:

 

8:00 AM: Complete breakfast and be ready for lectures

8:15-12:15 “Moving Water” lecture (Yonge).

Canoe training/water rescue/swift water safety/canoe signals/convoy, rope-throw practice (print out) (Maguire), plus all staff.

1:00 PM: “Lost” lecture (show on map) (Yonge). Map and Compass, GPS tracking, demo and compass course (hand out)

2:30 PM: “Water Purification and Hygiene” lecture (WP) Latrine and cat holes demo (student topic).

3:00 PM: Tea-time (edible plant)/hike/water purification demo (time permitting) Ceremony engraving.

3:30: “Camp Kitchen”, meal and menu planning, prepare dinner (Cori)

7:00PM: “Land Acknowledgement”, “Living or Dying at the Wildland Urban Interface” (Yonge)

8:00 PM: Campfire: End of Day

 

Sunday:

 

8:00: Complete Breakfast and be ready for Lectures

8:15: “Personal camping gear”/group camping gear/communication box (demo)(Yonge)

9:15: “River Planning” and selection lecture (map study) Delta water levels (show handout). “Convoy Protocol” (Yonge)

10:15: Canoe Practice (Maguire), Z-Drag

12:15: Lunch

1:00PM: Take down camp and gear storage

2:00 PM: Depart
